1. Start Right Away
Don’t wait for the New year, for next Monday, or for someone else to give you courage. If you have a friend that’s going to the same club, that’s great. Ask them how you go about doing a trial. Most gyms even offer referral specials for new members this time of year. Don’t put it off any longer and start today!
2. Start Slow and Commit to Two Days Per Week
Consistency is the key to learning or starting something new. It will be difficult and challenging at the start but be consistent no matter what. Don’t go all out first two weeks in and burn yourself out. A good way is to pick two days per week and stick to it no matter what. Two days per week is the sweet spot for training Muay Thai. One might not feel like you are making any progress because it’s too long between sessions. Anything over two and you may burn out in the beginning of your journey. You won’t always feel like training but 1 year down the track you will be thankful you did.
3. Leave the Negative Thoughts at Home
With all the weirdness in the world over the past 3 years it’s only normal to have negative thoughts every now and then. It’s ok to acknowledge them but don’t let them take over your mind and stop you from achieving what you want to do in life. Common thoughts such as: I’m not fit enough, I’m too old, I’m not sure about this will pop up, but don’t let them stop you from starting your Muay Thai journey. Most gyms are very welcoming of beginners and have designated beginner programs to start with.
4. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
Have you heard the age old saying of “Comparison is the thief of joy”? When you first start Muay Thai you are going to see how good the regulars in the club are. It’s nice to admire them but don’t get caught up comparing yourself to them. They’ve probably trained a lot longer than you have. You are running your own race and just aim to be better than you were yesterday.
5. Make Sure You Stretch and Recover
Like starting any new physical activity your body may not be used to it. It’s important to take it slow and focus on your recovery afterwards particularly if you aren’t used to physical training. It may seem straight forward but you should prioritise things such as sleep, good nutrition, and stretching. All these things will ensure that you stay healthy and injury free
