If you’ve been curious about Muay Thai for women in Melbourne and quietly wondering whether it’s actually for you, this is written for you. Plenty of women walk into ACSA in Thornbury having never thrown a punch, unsure if they’ll be too unfit, too new, or too out of place. Almost none of them feel that way by the end of the first session.
I’ve coached beginners in Melbourne’s inner north for years, and the picture in most people’s heads — sparring hard in week one — has nothing to do with what actually happens when a woman starts training here.
Why Muay Thai for women in Melbourne is worth trying
Muay Thai is a striking art from Thailand that uses your hands, elbows, knees and shins — often called “the art of eight limbs”. You don’t need any of that to start. What draws most women in isn’t the fighting; it’s how they feel afterwards. Stronger. Clearer-headed. A bit more capable than they thought. It’s a full-body workout that doesn’t feel like a workout, because you’re too busy learning something. It also happens to tick every box in the physical activity guidelines for adults without feeling like a chore.
You don’t need to be fit or experienced first
This is the single biggest thing that stops women signing up, and it’s the one we most want to put to rest. You do not need to get fit before you start — the classes get you fit. You do not need any background in sport. Beginners learn the basics slowly, at their own pace, with a coach watching and correcting. Everyone in a beginner class is a beginner. That’s the whole point of it.
What a beginner class actually looks like
A typical session starts with a warm-up, then drilling the fundamentals — stance, guard, a straight punch, a kick — on pads and bags. You work with a partner or a coach, not against the room. There’s no pressure to spar, and beginners don’t. You leave having sweated, learned a couple of things, and usually laughed a fair bit. It’s technical enough to keep your brain busy and physical enough to leave the week’s stress on the mats.
Training with women who get it
ACSA’s women’s classes are led by Coach Mel Castillo, who trains and competes herself and coaches beginners week in, week out. Having a coach who understands what it’s like to start from scratch — and to train as a woman — changes the room. It’s calm, welcoming and genuinely supportive, which is exactly what most people are hoping for and aren’t sure they’ll get.
The community is the part people stay for
Ask our members why they keep coming back and very few say “the cardio”. They say the people. Muay Thai attracts a certain kind of down-to-earth, encouraging crowd, and the friendships that form on the mats tend to outlast whatever fitness goal brought someone in. As one member, Eleanor, put it in her Google review: “Very welcoming and friendly for beginners and women. Stellar culture and community, and incredible world-class coaches.”
Where we are and how to find us
ACSA is at 325A Darebin Road, Thornbury, in Melbourne’s inner north, with plenty of free all-day off-street parking. We’re rated 4.9 stars across more than 180 Google reviews. You can read more about our Muay Thai classes, or head straight to our dedicated women’s Muay Thai page for class times and details — or just come in and see the place for yourself.
How to start
The easiest way in is our 2-Week Beginner Course. It’s built for people who have never trained before: a short, structured run of beginner classes so you learn the fundamentals in a small group without being thrown in the deep end. Most women find two weeks is plenty of time to know whether Muay Thai is for them — and by then, they usually already know.
